Now that we've got a little bit of content on our front page, it's time to upload the server where your site is accessed. To do this, it is necessary to use an FTP program. You tell this program where your files are being loaded and your username and password (supplied by your space provider) and it will allow you to transfer the files you have been working on from your computer to their server space. These machines use a program called WS-FTP. The lab computers already have a profile set up for student websites called students.ou.edu, so all you need to do is select that profile and fill in your username and password as shown here to log into your site. If you're working from your home computer, you may download the program here Once you're logged in, you have two directories to keep track of. The one on the left are the files on your local computer. The one on the right is your webspace. To find the files you have been working on, click the drive letter that contains those files, then surf to the specific directory that contains them. Select the files you want to transfer to your web site and click the arrow pointing to the remote site. The selected files should now appear in the window on the right, and are therefore accessible over the internet. |
